    ACTIVITIES
    ASSISTANCE TO BILIARY ATRESIA FAMILIES

    1. Jonathan Chio, first baby assisted by LIFT-B.A.B.I.E.S. to have a transplant in Kaioshuing, Taiwan

LIFT-B.A.B.I.E.S. facilitated the liver transplant of Jonathan Chio, a one year old boy from Zamboanga City suffering from biliary atresia, at the Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Kaohsuing, Taiwan with the assistance of Dr. Vanessa De Villa, a member of that hospital's liver transplant team, who is also a consultant at the National Kidney Transplant Institute in Quezon City and the Philippine General Hospital in Manila.

The foundation provided guidance to Joseph and Nurlinda Chio, Jonathan's parents, in securing medical assistance and treatment for the baby. It introduced the Chio family to Dr. Carlo Ramirez, chief of the Organ Transplantation Division of the NKTI, who assessed the condition of the baby, and to Dr. De Villa.

LIFT-B.A.B.I.E.S. helped the Chio family in securing a P100,000 grant from the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO), visas for Taiwan, and donations of milk and medicine from pharmaceutical companies and other donors.

Through the direct intercession of Dr. De Villa, Jonathan had his liver transplant on March 27, 2002, with his mother, Nurlinda, as liver donor, with Dr. Villa as the principal surgeon.

(Dr. Villa has, since then, moved back to the Philippines where she is a consultant of the National Kidney Transplant Institute in Quezon City, the Philippine General Hospital, and Makati Medical Center.

Dr. Villa is spearheading a team of doctors in laying the foundation for a local pediatric liver transplant program either at the PGH, the Makati Medical Center or the Asian Hospital.)

The P3 million cost of the transplant was shouldered by Filipino Overseas Contract Workers (OCWs) in Taiwan; the Manila Economic and Cultural Office in Taipeh; Kaohsuing residents; the PCSO; and other donors.

The Chio family returned to the Philippines August 2002. LIFT-B.A.B.I.E.S. continues to assist the Chio family in sourcing medicine and milk and providing financial assistance for Jonathan's post-transplant maintenance program.

    2. Nicolai Magtibay, second baby assisted by LIFT-B.A.B.I.E.S. to have a transplant in Kaohsuing, Taiwan

Another biliary atresia baby that LIFT-B.A.B.I.E.S. helped is Nicolai Magtibay, born August 13, 2002 with biliary atresia, to Malvin Magtibay and Jane Salle, residing at 115 Cordillera St., Sampaguita Hills, UPS IV, West Service Road, Paranaque City.

LIFT-B.A.B.I.E.S. introduced Nicolai to Dr. De Villa, assisted the Magtibay couple by providing the initial financial assistance and help on how to raise the P3 million for a liver transplant at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, and spiritual counseling. Starting in February 2003, Malvin began distributing flyers and making appeals to the general public. His fund-raising campaign got a big boost when his story and that of LIFT-B.A.B.I.E.S. was featured on ABS-CBN Channel 2's Correspondents. By September 2003, Malvin was able to raise P4 million, with P1 million coming from the PCSO.

Through the help of Dr. De Villa, Nicolai was admitted to Chang Gung Memorial Hospital Oct. 19, 2003 and had his liver transplant Oct. 22, 2003 with his mother, Jane, as the liver donor. Nicolai and his mother are back in the Phiippines.

The Magtibay family is one of the four biliary atresia babies that LIFT-B.A.B.I.E.S. has helped---through outright donations of cash from family members and from donors, solicitation of medicines and milk, assistance in securing financial grants from PCSO and other sources, advice and guidance in contacting local and foreign institutions which can provide a liver transplant, and, most importantly, spiritual counseling.

    3. Liver Transplant for Karl Villanueva and Kirby Erick Hizon

Two more biliary atresia babies had their liver transplant at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Kaohsuing, Taiwan: Karl Villanueva in January 2004 and Kirby Erick Hizon on August 18, 2004 after enlisting and being assisted by the foundation. Both babies are now back in the Philippines.

    4. Assistance to More than 80 Other Babies with Liver Ailments

Apart from the Chio, Magtibay, Villanueva and Hizon babies, LIFT-B.A.B.I.E.S. is assisting or has assisted more than 80 other children suffering from various pediatric liver ailments and other conditions. Of this number, the following are the ones whose families are actively raising funds for the liver transplant of their children with the help of the foundation:
